Sun Tzu Art of War Summary

Sun Tzu is a commander and thinker who is thought to have lived in the sixth century BC, whose birth and death date are unknown. Sun Tzu goes to the Wu principality in the south of China and enters the service of the lord of the period, He LU. He thinks that ZI is a good commander and makes him the commander of his army.

The book consists of thirteen chapters. The first part is “Calculation”. In this chapter, Sun Tzu mentions five important points:

The road, sky, earth, commander and rule. According to Sun Tzu, there is no war without calculating these five important points. Whoever knows them wins, who does not know loses. The second part is “War”. In this episode, Sun Tzu talks about things to take when going to war. He mentions that a long time in the war will be to the detriment of the country. The third part is “Tactical Attack”. In this episode, Sun Tzu says that the best victory is one without a fight. Thus, the army is prevented from giving casualties. The fourth part is “Stance (deployment)”. In this episode, Sun Tzu says that victory can be foreseen but cannot be created.

He talks about defending if you are insufficient, and attacking if you have more. The fifth chapter is “Power (State)”. In this episode, Sun Tzu mentions that even if all the troops of the army are attacked, it is the surprise maneuvers from the front that will change the war. The sixth part is “Weakness – Strength”. In this episode, Sun Tzu mentions that the person who goes to the battlefield early will be more comfortable and says that the weak points of the enemy in the field must be observed well in order to ensure victory conditions. He says that the most important point of the war is not to show the enemy what to do. The seventh chapter is “Operation.”

In this episode, Sun Tzu says that the difficulty of operation is to turn the devious into straight, and the disadvantage into advantage. He tells that the one who knows the winding roads before will win. The eighth chapter is “Nine Variables: A Thousand and One Possibilities”. He mentions that the commander who understands the advantages of possibilities is a good commander. He says that the commander who cannot understand these advantages will not be successful even if he knows the terrain conditions very well. He says that advantages and disadvantages must be taken into account together. The ninth chapter is “Putting the Army in Action (March).”

In this chapter, Sun Tzu talks about the importance of positions that should be chosen when fighting. He mentions how it will be important to take position in the places to pass in the war and their advantages. The tenth chapter is “Land”. In this episode, Sun Tzu mentions the existence of various terrains. He mentions the importance of positioning in these land types. He mentions that it would be advantageous to settle on high ground in easy-to-reach terrain, it would seem advantageous to attack the enemy on winding terrains, but this was wrong, that it was not advantageous to settle high on steep terrain and have clear visibility, and that it would not be advantageous to attack in distant land. The eleventh chapter is “The Nine Lands.”

In this chapter, Sun Tzu says that there are scattered, borderline, contentious, open, central, important, difficult, besieged and desperate lands in the art of war. He says that if the situation is advantageous, action must be taken, not that it must be stopped. The twelfth episode is “Attack with Fire”. In this episode, Sun Tzu says there are five types of fire attack. These are: Attacking the enemy’s troops, supplies and supplies, horse-drawn carriages, warehouses, and supply routes. He mentions that the day and time of attacking with fire is important. Attacking on a rainy day is a disadvantage.

The thirteenth chapter is “Using Spy”. In this episode, Sun Tzu mentions that going to war will put the country in financial and moral difficulties. He says that knowing ahead of time is an advantage. He mentions that this can be done with a human. According to Sun Tzu, there are five types of spies. These are: local spy, spy within the enemy, spy changed sides, dead spy and live spy. A local spy is a spy living in the local community. The spy within the enemy are the officers within the enemy. The spy who has changed sides are the spies of the enemy working for us. The dead spy are our spies who transmit false information to the enemy. Live spy are spies who bring us information. Army is very important in this war and acts on this.
